Man arrested after homeowner in his 60s seriously beaten in burglary

The householder was confronted by a gang of four masked men as he answered the door of his home in Terenure last night.

GARDAÍ HAVE ARRESTED a man in his 30s in connection with an aggravated burglary at a house in Fortfield Road, Terenure, last night. The homeowner, a man in his 60s, was badly beaten during the raid.

The incident began at around 9.30pm. The homeowner answered the door to be confronted by a gang of at least four masked men, gardaí say.

The gang assaulted the man, and demanded cash. The homeowner’s son was also in the house at the time.

The gang fled after householder’s wife returned and disturbed the men.

Gardaí responding to the alert intercepted a red van near the scene last night, and arrested the driver — a man in his 30s. He’s been taken for questioning to Terenure Garda Station. The house has been sealed off as forensic tests get under way.

The homeowner was taken for treatment afterwards to St James’s Hospital. His injuries are not life-threatening.

Gardaí have issued an appeal for information. They’re looking to speak to anyone who was in the Fortfield Road, Lavarna Road or Kimmage Cross Road areas of Dublin 6 between 9pm and 10pm last night, or anyone who noticed a red transit type van in the area.

Terenure Garda Station can be contacted on 01 666 6400.
