California police investigating death of Irish pedestrian in road crash

Police said that the driver cooperated fully and it appears that neither alcohol nor any other impairment was a factor.

POLICE IN CALIFORNIA are investigating the death of an Irishman who was killed after being hit by a vehicle on Friday morning.

Police and paramedics found the 46-year-old, understood to be Clare native Brian McMahon, unconscious on the roadway at Devon Drive after 7.30am.

Life saving measures were started at the scene and he was taken to Kaiser Hospital where he was announced dead on arrival.

The driver remained on scene and called 911 to report the collision. A number of bystanders were also interviewed at the scene.

Police said that the driver cooperated fully with the investigation and “it appears that neither alcohol nor any other impairment was present or a factor” in the collision.

The vehicle involved was taken by police for inspection.

A spokesperson for the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs said the consulate is aware of the incident.
