Can Drogheda tweet its way out of the recession?

Retailers want shoppers to visit the town, take photos of products, and post them on Twitter – with prizes up for grabs.

THE COUNTY LOUTH town of Drogheda is encouraging shoppers to help the town work its way out of recession… through the modern medium of Twitter.

Shoppers visiting the town this Saturday are being asked to take photos of products on sale in a list of specific participating stores, and to post them to the microblogging website.

Users who post photographs from at least five shops, include the #tweeptown hashtag, and post photos of the most original or fun products on sale in the town can win gifts and vouchers worth €3,000.

The initiative is part of the town’s efforts to revive its retail sector as part of the RTÉ One TV series ‘Local Heroes – A Town Fights Back’. Drogheda has been hit badly in recent years by cross-border shopping.

Over 40 retailers in the town have signed up for the promotion. Shoppers hoping to enter the contest are required to register online in advance.

Do you think promotions like this will encourage more shoppers?
