body in suitcase

Young man whose dismembered body was found in canal was killed elsewhere

Gardaí have been giving more details about the investigation this evening.

THE YOUNG MAN whose body was discovered in the Grand Canal in Co Kildare at the weekend was killed at another location, gardaí have confirmed.

The superintendent heading up the investigation has been giving more details of the team’s progress this evening.

Speaking to RTÉ’s Drivetime programme, Superintendent Gerry Wall described the victim as a “young male” – explaining that that was the best description they could give at the moment.

He had been killed very recently, Wall said – most likely between Thursday and Saturday afternoon, when the body was found in a suitcase in the canal at Arclough.

Gardaí have confirmed the man was killed at another location – and Wall issued an appeal for people returning to their property or their work premises after the weekend break to check for anything unusual.

“Maybe a room disturbed,” he said.

Equipment moved, or indeed an attempt to clean up a premises or property which they wouldn’t have expected.

He said it was a traumatic case, adding that they had had 80 calls to Leixlip Garda Station from locals with information about people or cars seen in the area in recent days.

Appealing for anyone else who may have seen something unusual to get in contact, he added:

The information that they may have may seem insignificant to them but may be important to us.

The number for Leixlip Garda Station is 01 666 7800.

No information was available on the man’s identity or nationality, Wall said.

Discovery

The dismembered remains were discovered by people out walking at Ardclough on Saturday afternoon, and the area was sealed off by gardaí.

A preliminary post-mortem was carried out at the scene, and the body was later removed to the morgue at Naas General Hospital.

Garda divers have been carrying out investigations at the canal, alongside other specialist officers.
