Open thread: What's the best little piece of career advice you've ever got?

We’re collecting your best tips for getting ahead. Plus, here are some of ours.

FOR MOST OF us, achieving career success means a great deal.

And success doesn’t have to mean money, power or responsibility – it can mean the freedom to make a living doing something you love.

Through our careers, many of us carry around one little piece of advice. Something someone said once that just… stuck. Something we often refer back to.

And today, we’re asking: What’s the best little piece of career advice you’ve ever got? We want you to share your wisdom in the comments below – to build a collection of all our best tips.

Why? Well, we’re currently partnering with UCD Smurfit School to offer one Fora reader an MBA scholarship worth up to €34,500.

We also asked the team here at TheJournal.ie what advice they think of most often. One staffer told us their best advice was this: Always look like you’re in control, even when it doesn’t feel like it.

Don’t look too busy would be the best I ever got. Nobody’s going to ask you to take on extra responsibilities or think of you for a promotion if you look or seem stressed.

Another? Don’t lose sight of balance in your life.

“No-one will ever stand over your grave and say, ‘She was a great worker – never took a lunch break’.” In other words, keep things in perspective.

And one reporter said the advice they think of most is: Passion for what you’re doing will get you a long, long way.

If you are really passionate about something, no matter what it is, you’ll always capture people’s attention.

Now, over to you. Join the discussion, and let us know: What’s the most useful piece of career advice you’ve ever received?

We’re all ears, and hoping to learn a lot!
