Cat 'struck by pellets from gun' on Belfast Road - and survives

It was a discovery that recalls a recent Love/Hate episode, with police treating it as a case of animal cruelty.

VIEWERS OF LOVE/HATE were shocked last week when an episode showed a cat getting shot by a teenager – but now it appears a similar incident has taken place in real life.

The PSNI said today that police in Newtownabbey are appealing for information after an injured cat was discovered on the Belfast Road in Ballyclare this afternoon.

They said that it is believed the cat had been struck by pellets from some type of gun.

The injured cat thankfully survived the incident and was treated by a local vet for an injury to its leg.

After a cat was shot in Love/Hate last week there were 40 complaints lodged with RTÉ. Animal rights groups criticised the broadcaster for airing the sequence where the cat gets shot by a teenager with a machine gun.

There is no suggestion that today’s incident was linked in any way to Love/Hate. Police are treating this as a case of animal cruelty and are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to contact them at Newtownabbey Police Station on 0845 600 8000.

Information can be passed anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
