A Cavan hairdresser raised €2000 after a family lost their wallet on New Year's Eve

And the whole town pitched in.

“A YOUNG WELL known couple lost a wallet in Cavan town yesterday Friday. The wallet contained €2,000 which was there total money for the month of January.”

So began the Facebook status of Cavan hairdresser Lorraine O’Neill in the early hours of New Year’s Eve.

She had become aware that the family – Liam and Laura, who have four kids – had lost the €2000 and she came upon an idea to get it back for them:

She’d raffle off a ghd hair straightener she had in her Main Street Barber salon

Unfortunately, the money had slipped out of Liam’s pocket between the bank and his car – and of course the family was devastated with January on the horizon.

Once Lorraine put the call out on Facebook – a line in the raffle was going for €20 – the response was incredible. She tells DailyEdge.ie:

I came in to open the salon at 9am and there was an envelope under the door with money. That was just the start of it.
By 4pm that day, we had raised all the money – and it was then that I discovered the family’s friends had been doing their own collection.

At this stage – just 12 hours after the salon opened – €3370 had been raised from the raffle and donations

As Lorraine updated her Facebook that evening:

This young couple were so Thankful & in shock that people would care as much. You have all taken the pressure of what was a horrible situation to be found in & turned it into one that will be remembered for years
in the coming days Liam & Laura will decide where the balance will go. We promise it will not be wasted.

A team effort from everyone in Cavan town.

What a way to save the day coming into 2017.
