Vaccines worth €6 million destroyed by HSE

Over €6 million in stocks of vaccines were destroyed by the HSE between 2005 and 2010.

THE HSE DESTROYED more than €6 million worth of unused vaccines between 2005 and the end of 2010.

According to the Medical Independent, the stocks of vaccines were destroyed because they had expired or because of a break in the cold chain.

The HSE said the figure is within the international standards as the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that destroyed vaccines should account for less than 5 per cent of total vaccine spend.

In the five-year period, the HSE purchased €91 million of childhood vaccines and it returned €1.2 million worth for destruction.

Between 2005 and the end of 2010 the HSE destroyed €5.06 million worth of unused season flu and H1N1 vaccine.
