Kayakers rescued after spending the night on an island

The pair were kayaking in Kerry, but lost their paddles.

A MAN AND woman had to be rescued from a swollen river after getting into difficulty while kayaking.

The pair lost their paddles at around 7.30pm on Saturday night while paddling on the Gearhameen River.

Calls were made to the Coast Guard and Killarney river rescue attended the scene.

However, they were unable to make a rescue due to the swollen speed of the river.

Members of Killarney rescue managed to pass clothes and food to the kayakers by midnight and waited for first light, while the pair waited on an island.

At 8.30am yesterday, Shannon Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 115 arrived and winched the casualties to the river bank and Killarney Rescue.

Both were described as being unhurt.
