College students can pre-order week's dinners online for €10*

*The only catch is they have to cook it themselves.

PARENTS CONCERNED THAT their college-going kids might not be getting three square meals a day have an option to order the ingredients for a week’s dinners for €10.

The CleverCuisine.ie scheme – which launched last year – has now extended to three colleges, University College Dublin, NUI Maynooth and Trinity College Dublin.

Under the programme, M&K Meats Ltd offers four easy-to-cook meals – fresh veg and meat supplied – for just €10. So, not quite a full working week but enough for Monday to Thursday before, presumably, your little darling heads home to the parental pantry.

The recipes are online and students or parents can order the pack online to be delivered to the student centres in the relevant colleges for collection.

It began as a collaboration between UCD and the butcher’s company last year but has proven popular enough for a rollout to the other two universities mentioned. It followed a survey of UCD students in 2011 which showed that over four-fifths of them had skipped meals in order to pay academic costs. The UCD students’ union approached M&K Meats to source the produce for the food packs.

Have you any good tips for college-going students trying to cook economically?

We’d like to hear from you in the comments section (it’s not just students who need budget-friendly food tips so we might take notes for ourselves!)
