So here are the standout comments from the week that was.

Well done to the person who hit him with a car.

If you can buy a dress for £10/€10 including shipping store overheads, people are then surprised that the workers are exploited? Really? Case of selective reality.

5. This instant reaction the Luis Suarez bite earned IrishGravyTrain 1,768 thumbs of the green kind.

WTF is wrong with him. How hard is it to not bite somebody. Lol

Shane McHugh was on the flight that had to make an emergency landing after the plane lost power last weekend. He shared his experience.

I was one of the two skydivers on the plane yesterday afternoon, we were diving in aid of two childrens charities, Aoibheanns Pink Tie and the Laura Lynn childrens hospice. It was my first time doing a skydive, and my friend who was also in the plane, it was her first time ever being in a plane. Only for the sheer skill and calm thinking of the pilot I really believe all five of us would have been seriously injured or killed, the plane lost power shortly after take off at approx 3-400 feet, he barely managed to glide the plane over the roofs of houses and trees into the field where we violently but ultimately safely landed. We all escaped with just cuts, bruises and whiplash. Thumbs up to the pilot again, well done to him! I hope to give the dive another shot again before the year is out, no point writing something off because of one bad experience?

Last weekend, TheJournal.ie highlighted some of the issues surrounding domestic violence – how men and women are victims. Tim Stephen Hendy also touched on another related issue.

Using children as a weapon against the other parent is an issue that doesn’t really get as much exposure as it should, and it’s something where it’s hard to imagine any parent could do to their child – and it happens all the time. Thanks to a rather biased judge, my ex only has to allow me one week PER YEAR of visitation with my son, and is very careful not to exceed such a generous allowance. When he was 11 he was due for his first visit to Canada, for which I informed her that he required a typed permission letter to enter the country. I even wrote it myself and asked her to print it. He turned up at YVR with a handwritten scribble with an address and phone number on it, was detained by immigration on arrival until we could convince them that he had his mother’s permission to be here. He wasn’t too shaken by the experience, thankfully, but an 11 year old shouldn’t be taken away by uniformed men with guns because his mother felt like playing games. This has not let up over the last five years, and a parent who will subject their child to hurt and unpleasantness merely to upset a former partner (who have barely spoken in ten years, mind) is no parent at all, as far as I’m concerned.

This week, we found out that hiding pregnancies is not a “thing of the past”. Scrap Croke Park1 told us:

My sister hid her first pregnancy from my Da cos she wasn’t married at the time. She finally told him and he was fine about it. “So when’s the baby due?” he asked“Wednesday”All worked out in the end :-)

While paramedic had another story to share:

I work as a paramedic and we were sent on a call for a 15 year old female. When we arrived we were met by her patients who said she had severe abdo pain. When we examined her, I asked could you be pregnant, the patients bit the head off me, when the daughter spoke up said she was. After the shock we delivered a beautiful baby girl. I was luck enough to meet the family months later. Glad to say all was well, but they were still coming to terms with it but were proud grandparent..

Meanwhile, Jolene Molloy shares her recent experience of childbirth.

Just had my baby on Friday in Rotunda . They are severely overstretched. You just need to walk around the place for five minutes to see that. The antenatal appointments frightened me so much all I could keep thinking if I have to sit on the floor for those will there be a bed for me give birth in . The dedication of the staff is keeping things going

Have you ever tasted goodie? We had never even heard of it but Tess K explained after a piece about Irish delicacies.

Is there anybody here from Munster, because I’m pretty sure it was a Munster thing (although I could be wrong), who ate ‘goodie’ in like the 80s and 90s? It was a staple of my diet growing up. White bread torn up and mixed with tea, a few teaspoons of sugar, a knob of kerrygold and a dash of milk in a bowl. #memorylane

Speaking of Irish treats – we also asked you this week if you should drink hot beverages on a hot day. Here’s a lovely Irish Dad story from whippiegirl1:

My father used to be an ultra marathon runner who would train and compete sometimes in ridiculously hot temperatures. He always reached for a cup of tea after a run.He used to tell us that the body uses up energy to regulate cold drinks back up to body temperature. We used to think he was completely crazy but I have great memories of the sweat pouring down his face while he drank his warm tea!

This ad made us cry. And it also started a good discussion about the phrase ‘run like a girl’. Aang said:

Never thought about it until I had 2 daughters. Now that expression used as an insult really annoys me. Was in the library and my 8yr old refused to get a book unless the hero was female and most of the main characters were female and the book was not about sleepovers or fairies. We left empty handed! Book suggestions anyone?

Some of the replies suggested A Might Girl, Matilda, Little Women, The Secret Garden and Philip Pullman’s Dark Materials trilogy.

At the start of the week, DailyEdge.ie asked for your embarrassing children-in-supermarket stories. We can feel the heat from Karen Mulreid‘s red face all the way over here.

My son is only 14 months so as of yet hasn’t done anything embarrassing in a supemarket. Me on the other hand … yeah. Last week I was walking around Tesco picking up some bread and milk, full of the joys of summer, when I noticed other shoppers smiling and nodding at me. God, I must look great today, sez I, delighted with myself. Only to look down seconds later and realise that the strap had snapped on my dress, meaning the front had fallen down, exposing my right boob to the world. There I was bouncing all over the place, totally oblivious.I don’t think anything my baby could ever do could top that.

And Anna_Montana gave us our weekly dose of karma.

I saw a guy pretending to pick up his dogs sinful business, he didn’t. He then stepped in it himself. The lols were had.

Finally, one from Noel Ryan, apropos of nothing.

Does Eamon Dunphy have worms or wha?
