Top comments of the week

Did you make the cut?

EVERY SATURDAY MORNING we take a look at all the best comments left on the site by our readers over the past seven days.

This week there was a lot of talk about the same-sex marriage referendum, Waterford Whispers and a possible Irish James Bond.

So here are the standout comments from the week that was.

1. Joanna had some well-deserved praise for Waterford Whispers – and 2,941 readers agreed.

Waterford Whispers is truly a national treasure at this stage.

2. Responding to a number of teachers who said they’d be voting no next week, Aoife Ní Chonaráin got 2,852 green thumbs for this:

As a secondary school teacher, I already teach about what “gay”, “transgender” and “lesbian” mean. If it was approached at an earlier age rather than hushed out to the playground to be used as an insult and embedded in young minds as a negative thing, maybe I would encounter a day of the year where there isn’t a homophobic incident!!!

3. The sad news of Derek Davis’ passing came through on Thursday morning. Jeremiah Horsebeard paid his respects, getting 2,379 thumbs up.

RIP Derek. Will never forget hearing his voice on Live at Three everyday. Meant school was done for the day.

4. Colm Vambeck was not impressed by the liberation of a number of lobsters on Monday. Neither were 2,318 of you.

What a bunch clueless idiots, not a brain cell between them. They dont even know anything about Lobsters, they dont live in Clontarf bay where the tide goes in and out and will leave them stranded for the seagulls to attack them. If they had a brain they would know they live in deep water in the rocks like OFF HOWTH HEAD you fools. If you have a cause you should have a tiny bit of knowledge of the animals your trying to liberate. And they looked so happy dumping the little lobsters into the sea without any rehabilitation to see if they were strong enough to survive after being held in a tank without food, They would have been weak and traumatised. Stupid, uneducated immature comes to mind.
Thats my 2 cent.

5. Part II of Aoife’s comment above also made the top 5 with 1,951 thumbs up.

And dare I say they might even stretch to encouraging an ethos not only of tolerance but also of inclusivity, acceptance and equality!!!

Puns of the week

Italy Spectre Photo Call Associated Press Associated Press

There was an absolute pun-off in a post about James Bond’s next movie possibly coming to Ireland.

Trevor Elliot kicked it off with: Bring on “Quantum of Sligo”

Followed with John C Thomas’ ‘A view to Achill’ and Cathal Toomey’s ‘From Roscommon with Love’.

We liked Owen Gannon: ‘Dr. I will yeah’ and John Smith’s: ‘The Spy Who Loved Meath’

Standout comments this week

We were all talking about that fall on Vincent Browne during the week. It really cheered some people – like Daniel Buckley – up.

I may be hopelessly at sea for my final year exams this morning but at least I didn’t fall over on national TV. I’m taking all the positives I can get

We asked you to test your Irish shopping centre knowledge last week. Here’s what Andrew McQuillan had to say.

I remember when shopping centres were so fancy they all had their own radio jingles. Only this morning I found myself singing ‘Donaghmede – shopping centre – the better place to shop’, followed by ‘Northside – Northside – the great big shopping centre.’(This comment will mean nothing to readers under 40)

Finally, we enjoyed this exchange:
