Top comments of the week

Here’s our round-up of the most interesting and most popular comments from the past seven days. Did you make it in?

EVERY SATURDAY MORNING we take a look at all the best comments left on the site by our readers over the past seven days.

This week there was a lot of talk about the …

So here are the standout comments from the week that was.

The 5 most popular comments this week

1. When 16 stupid questions about Irish people were posed, Wildman had his own uniquely Irish question in response. It earned him 4,422 green thumbs.

Why don’t you ask my b#**+$

2. A man was seriously injured on Aston Quay in Dublin during the week and Matt Donovan was not pleased about the violence in parts of the capital. 2,857 of you echoed his sentiments.

Several of the usual suspects arguing & this happens. This is the 2nd time in the last few years this has happened & enough is enough. Aston Quay is one of the most dangerous parts of the city because of these parasite low life’s! Factor in the amount of bus stops, loading bays, taxi ranks & the volume of people & it’s a dangerous mix. My sympathies lie with my colleague on the bus & the people who witnessed this incident. As for the vermin, call me harsh & red thumb away but I deal with these things every single day & they are quite simple a drain on life itself! Tell me all you like how that they’re people but remember that one of these people threw another under 16 tonnes without regard for life or limb.

3.  American tourist Joe Sheahan made headlines when he was robbed while saving a man from the Liffey. James Ducey said that the news that a crowdfunding campaign had been organised reminded him of one thing that 1,981 people agreed with.

There will always be more good people than bad…good read to finish off a long day in work, thanks!

4. There were protests outside a commemoration for Irish troops who died in World War I, which Wayne O’Fathaigh felt was disrespectful and 1,788 of you agreed.

The protestors here are the absolute lowest of the low, every Irish man that served in WW1 did so voluntarily, for a wide varieties of reasons. Attempting to desecrate their name or rewrite Irish history is brainless!

5. Dublin’s own Spiderman got into a fight this week and James St John Smith took aim at his opponent’s sartorial choices, receiving 1,721 green thumbs.

He must be an athlete if he’s wearing a tracksuit in public.

2. This Sinn Féin councillor said the UN should shell Israel, to Bring Netanyahu “to heel” (322 comments)

3. Hamas agrees to 24-hour humanitarian truce (273 comments)

The big issue this week

Ivor Callely court case Brian Lawless Brian Lawless

There was a lot of discussion this week about Ireland’s crime system and whether, as a country, we are too soft on criminals. The debate came after the jailing of former junior minister Ivor Callely for five months. Live at Oriel believes his €4,000 expenses fraud brings up another problem.

This issue also brings to focus the ridiculous expenses TDs and Senators can claim legally.TD’s 3 miles from the Dail can claim up to 13,000 euro for a parliamentry standard allowance a year.It is basically a travel allowance .For the month of May some TDs living 85 kilometres from the Oireachtas claimed over 4,000 euro.In the same constituency two Senators claimed nearly 3,000 euro expenses for a 170 kilometre daily round trip for the month of May for their parliamentary standard allowance. The Seanad sits just 3 days a week. All these expenses are perfectly legal. But tell me who gets paid nearly 3,000 euro a month to do a 104 miles round trip to Dublin 3 days a week.Senators unelected do. The whole expense system in the Oireachtas has to be overhauled.

Pun(s) of the week

A Dublin street was closed during the week so firemen could make safe a high-rise window which had collapsed and exploded outwards. Our readers (and reporter Paul Hosford) had some fun with it (nobody was injured in the incident).

Some of our favourite comments

Earlier this week, one of our polls kicked off a discussion about what age is too old to still live at home with your parents. A thread veered in the direction of what happens when it comes to dating if you’re still under the folks’ roof. Somebody mentioned a hotel and in stepped Zozzy Zozimus. Bravo.

I’m a woman with adult children, one of whom is currently living in my home. If he could afford to be bringing young hussies to a hotel, but somehow couldn’t find the money to pay rent or move out, I can assure you he’d be booted out the door faster than you can say “afternoon delight”.

We talked this week about the danger of high heels, something Liam Ó Séicspéir knows all too well.

I once broke my foot wearing heels. I took about three steps and then went over on my ankle and had to spend four weeks in a cast. My wife was absolutely raging because the heel broke off in the process.Cheers for raking up that old memory, journal.ie!
