Conned Cork pensioner gets some life savings back

Two men arrested in investigation into how man posed as Garda to trick elderly man to hand over large sum of money.

AN ELDERLY MAN who had his life savings robbed from him has had some of the money recovered.

A Garda spokesman confirmed to TheJournal.ie that “a substantial amount of cash” which was recovered in a house search in Cork yesterday appeared to belong to the  pensioner. He had been conned into handing over the cash, which he had kept in his home at Sunvalley Drive in Cork city, by a man who was reported to have posed as a Garda. That man was driven away from the scene by another male.

Two men were arrested yesterday by gardai carrying out searches in their investigation of the incident. One man was arrested during a search of a house in the Blarney area of Co Cork. A large amount of cash was also found in the house.

The second man was arrested after a house was searched in the Fairhill area of Cork. A car was also seized and is undergoing forensic tests. Both arrested men are in their late 20s and are being questioned at Gurranabraher Garda station.
