Green light given for major €50 million redevelopment of Cork cinema

It is expected to bring around 1,000 jobs to the city centre.

A MAJOR REDEVELOPMENT of Cork’s Capitol Cinema site has been given the green light.

The scheme was approved back in July but was subsequently appealed, leading to it being delayed until now.

Work on the project will begin in January and is expected to be completed by the end of next year.

It is estimated that it could bring around 1,000 new jobs into Cork city.

In addition to this the project will add around €92 million to the national GDP and generate Exchequer revenue of €21 million in a year.

What is included in the site?

The site will also include buildings holding retail space, office space and a food area fronting out onto St Patrick’s Street and the Grand Parade in the centre of Cork.

Approval was given earlier today by An Bord Pleanála to the JCD Group, who are developing the site.

Speaking about the announcement, John Cleary, managing director of the JCD group said:

We are really pleased with this positive decision and excited that we can now proceed… as a Cork-based company, we realise the history and significance of The Capitol as a location and the important role that the development will play in the rejuvenation of that part of the city.

The approved plans differ slightly from those that were originally put forward in July.

The move was also welcomed at a government level.

Speaking about it, Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney said:

This is one of the most significant developments that Cork has seen in decades.
