Court grants order blocking sacking of Brown Thomas worker

A member of staff wins a High Court order stopping Brown Thomas from terminating her employment.

A MEMBER OF STAFF of the Brown Thomas group has been granted a High Court order which temporarily stops the company from sacking her.

RTÉ News reports that the worker told the court she was being made redundant after complaining of harassment and bullying in the workplace.

The order restraining Brown Thomas from terminating Mullen’s contract was issued by Justice Mary Laffoy. Lawyers for Brown Thomas will have an opportunity to outline their arguments when the case is heard again on Tuesday.

  • Yes it is newsworthy. Let the ordinary people have a fight for their rights against big companies, especially if they are the victims of bullying and/or harassment. This in turn encourages other victims to come forward and achieve justice for wrongs committed against them.well done to her for having the balls to get this to court and fighting for her rights.

  • Well said Abi, bullying at work or anywhere else for that matter is not good.

  • My sister worked for BT. Each day she was at the mercy of whatever mood the duty manager was in. The nature of this mood was subject to whatever was going on in the personal life of the manager, what stage in her monthly cycle the manager was at, plus other inane reasons. My sister, along with other staff, was screamed at on a regular basis, usually for no reason. Hissy fits and personal comments were de rigour, with my sister once being advised that she was getting fat and needed to lose weight by her immediate manager. If you were sick in work, they did not want to know, she had the winter vomiting bug once, and was not allowed to go home because it was busy, even tho she had passed out on the shop floor, such was the severity of the virus. The store also tried their best to make life awkward for older staff, on the old Brown Thomas contracts, whom they resented, as their terms and conditions meant that they could not treat them as badly as they would like, or pay them as little as they would like. The General Manager of the store was a cold hearted career woman type who took no mat leave and had a subservient house husband. She cared more about store displays than she did about her staff. It’s no secret that staff ‘care’ is not one of BT’s strong points, not since they were bought out anyway. Even being in a union when employed there is extremely frowned upon. Having heard the stories, I am not surprised that a case like this has ended up in the courts, and it’s no harm, as it might serve as a wake up call for them. BT do not appear to know how to treat their employees properly. Fair play to the lady involved for having the guts to take it this far.

    • I was only discussing this the other day. It comes down to people being made managers but not trained to be managers. Plus in the current climate people are so afraid of losing their jobs these “managers” take advantage and in the end create a bad work environment for all staff which in turn leads to bad business and adds to the problems already there. Idiots! Hope they are punished hard for this.

  • Yes Abi I agree, very brave of her to take Brown Thomas on, probably hoped she’d walk away!

  • Just thinking though, if she wins, which I hope she does, it would make her working live very unpleasant. Though I suppose she would feel she then had the upper hand.
