Explosive device made safe after Rathmines housing estate sealed off

A security alert forced the shut down of the Cowper Downs estate this morning.

Update 12.15pm

AN ARMY BOMB Disposal Team has made safe an improvised explosive device in Rathmines this morning.

A security alert was raised this morning after a suspect device was found on a public road in the Cowper Downs housing estate in the south Dublin suburb.

The scene was sealed off to members of the public travelling by car or on foot as a Defence Forces explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team was tasked.

It arrived on the scene at 9.45am and the device was rendered safe without the need for a controlled explosion. The scene was declared safe by 11am.

Plain clothes gardaí were also on the scene keeping people away from the area which was cordoned off.

“It is not yet clear what type of device or devices the security services may be dealing with,” the Defence Forces said, adding that the viable device has been taken a safe military location for further examination.

Its component parts will be handed to gardaí to assist them in their investigation.
