• The government has pledged to review the payment of child benefit after it emerged that it had spent over as €15 million on benefits on thousands of children who live overseas.
• A German man who fathered eight children with his stepdaughter and forced her into prostitution has been convicted of 162 counts of sexual abuse by a judge who called him a “pitiless egoist”.
• An Israeli court has sentenced former Israeli President Moshe Katsav, 65, to seven years in prison for rape, making him the highest-ranking Israeli official ever imprisoned.

• The European Hairdressing Championships will take place in Dublin in the RDS on 29 and 30 May. More than 40 countries will be represented by 5,000 hair and beauty experts – in an event that will give an estimated boost of €1.5 million to the Irish economy.
