Man arrested in connection with David Black murder is released

The man had been in garda custody. A file is being prepared for the DPP.

A MAN WHO was arrested in relation to the murder of prison officer David Black has been released.

The 51-year-old male had been arrested and detained at Ballyconnell Garda Station on Monday, in connection with an investigation into the activities of dissident republicans and the fatal shooting of Black.

The victim was a prison officer at HMP Maghaberry in Lurgan and was shot on 1 November 2012.

The arrested man was released from Garda custody, without charge, last night. A file is being prepared for the DPP.

A second male (34), who was arrested in connection with the same investigation, remains in Garda custody at Cavan Garda Station.

David Black, a 52-year-old father of two, was driving from his Cookstown home to work at Maghaberry prison at 7.30am on Thursday 1 November last year in his black Audi A4 when the incident occurred.

He was driving along the M1 motorway between Portadown (Junction 11) and Lurgan (Junction 10) when, one mile from the Oxford Island exit ramp, a a dark blue Toyota Camry car with a Republic of Ireland registration, 94 D 50997, pulled alongside and a number of shots were fired, fatally injuring Black.
