COALITION FORCES IN Afghanistan have suffered a terrible 24 hours as four French troops were shot and killed by an Afghan soldier in the east of the country, while a helicopter crash killed six NATO service members in the south.

Following the killings, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said that France is suspending its training programs for Afghan troops.

He said it was “unacceptable” that Afghan troops would attack French soldiers. He said French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe is heading to Afghanistan after the attack, which is among the most deadly for French forces in the 10 years they have been serving in the NATO-led international force in Afghanistan.

NATO said in statements that the Afghan shooter had been apprehended, but it disclosed no other details about the incident.

Taliban infiltration

It appeared to be the second time in a month that an Afghan soldier has attacked French forces. On 29 December 2011, a soldier in the Afghan National Army opened fire and killed two members of the 2nd regiment of the Foreign Legion. French forces fired back and killed the assailant.

Similar attacks have raised fears of increased Taliban infiltration of the Afghan police and army as NATO speeds up the training of the security forces. In some cases the attackers were Afghan soldiers who turned on NATO troops. Others involved insurgents dressed in Afghan uniforms.

Earlier this month, a US service member was killed when a man in an Afghan army uniform opened fire at a base in the south of the country.

Afghan security forces or insurgents dressed in their uniforms have attacked and killed international troops or civilian trainers more than a dozen times in the past two years, according to an Associated Press count.

In one of the worst incidents, a veteran Afghan military pilot opened fire at Kabul airport on April 27, 2011, killing eight US troops and an American civilian contractor.

U.S. Army Lt. Col. Jimmie Cummings Jr., a spokesman for the coalition, said that cases where Afghan soldiers have wounded or killed coalition forces are isolated cases and do not occur on a routine basis. “We train and are partnered with Afghan personnel every day and we are not seeing any issues or concerns with our relationships,” he said.

Enemy activity?

On Thursday, a NATO helicopter crashed, killing six members of the international military force.

The cause is still being investigated, but a coalition statement said there was no enemy activity in the area at the time of the crash.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef claimed insurgents shot down the helicopter, a Chinook, in Musa Qala district of Helmand province, killing all on board.

The coalition did not disclose the nationalities of those killed and would not release details of the crash until the families of the dead were notified.

It was the deadliest crash in Afghanistan since August, when 30 American troops died after a Chinook helicopter was apparently shot down in Wardak province in the center of the country.

  • Afghanistan is very important in terms of opium crops. Just search on google for graphs on production over the past 10 years. US soldiers ‘protect’ the opium crops. Maybe I’m just wearing a tin foil hat, if you believe they are liberating the Afghans.

Oh no, TEN NATO troops died! How many Afghanis died in that period of time? A hell of a lot more. It’s a stupid war that was started by the West for reasons most people wouldn’t believe. After the thousands and thousands of innocent civilians murdered over there, we have the cheek to make a big deal over 10th dead drones. Sickening.

    • btw.the Taliban are responsible for a majority of civilian deaths directly or indirectly by launching attacks from.behind human shields..a little objective reseach would serve you better than blind hate of the US UK and NATO. our defence forces have a bomb disposal.team on rotation as do the Gardai have a team involved in training the Afghan National Police.

Research? I’ve obviously done more than you, and in the right places. If you think the West has any honourable reason to be over there, and that the Western soldiers, be they US, British, French or whatever, are HEROES, then you’re simply too ignorant and brainwashed for me to bother conversing with you.

    • Ian..the only one deluded here is you..delighting in the deaths of anyone is SICKENING..you failed to comment on the murfer of 6 afghan civilians by the taliban..you are obviously blinded by your hatred of the very powers that protect your freedom of speech..ignorant of the act of war of 9/11 & the taliban regimes refusal to extradite theval qeeda terorist leadership..ignorant of the wholescale human rights abuses of the taliban who are as we debate using 8year old afghan children as guinea pigs to test yheir ied’s..their (while in.power) denial of education to girls..basically tetarding afghanistan to a stone age existance..the use of suicide bombers is fisgusting inhumane barbaric. as is your description of ISAF personnel killed in action as “drones”. the only thing i agree with you on is that debating further with you is pointless in.light of your blind hatred

I’m not delighting in their deaths, you liar. Point out a single instance where I did that. Of course it’s a tragedy for the families of those soldiers, but my point was that the death of such a small number is not newsworthy when you consider how much higher the death toll is on the other side.

So you still believe that 911 was a terrorist attack?! Since you like to bang on about research, go do some yourself. Find out what a False Flag is, and how many times the US has been caught carrying them out. Or you could just carry on believing what the mainstream news tells you.

As for the Taliban killing 6 civilians… whether they did or not is the business of Afghanistan, not NATO. The west has bombed many THOUSANDS of Afghan civilians, but that’s ok, is it? These “heroic” soldiers have been torturing enemy soldiers, abusing animals for fun, and raping civilians. These are the people you support. You disgust me.

Colm, your grasp on spelling and grammar is atrocious. Maybe try to brush up on it a bit before you try debating on a public forum.

In the meantime, enjoy life as one of the hive.
