THE DEATH TOLL from a band of severe weather that has hit the southern United States has risen to 35.

The storms have already hit three states in the US Deep South and spread to North Carolina where they hit on Saturday.

Authorities there say that 10 people are confirmed dead after storms spawning tornadoes swept through a small eastern North Carolina county.

Search teams were preparing to go out to the hardest-hit areas as dawn broke on Sunday looking for other victims.

A local police officer told AP that the tornado struck around 7 pm on Saturday and flipped cars, swept homes from their foundations and demolished other houses.

In total, at least 14 people died in North Carolina from Saturday’s tornadoes, bringing the death toll from the band of storms to at least 35 overall.
