PSNI ask Derry residents to be vigilant after 'big bang' rumours

The mystery of Derry’s ‘loud explosions’.

POLICE IN NORTHERN Ireland have asked people in Derry to be vigilant following reports of a loud explosion last night.

It is not clear what made the “loud bang” late last night but social media rumours of a bomb were unfounded.

The PSNI tweeted this morning:

“Reports of a loud bang in Derry City Centre. Police asking people to be vigilant. If you see a suspicious item, do not touch or move it – Please Call Police immediately.”

This is not Derry’s first ‘big bang’ mystery. On 12 January last year, UTV reported details of a security alert after a blast was heard. At the time, police said they exhausted all lines of enquiry but the cause of the ‘explosion’ remained unclear.
