THE LATEST FIGURES from property website Daft.ie shows that the average rent in Dublin is now €1,289 - up 14 per cent in the first quarter of 2014, compared to the same time last year.

Rents in other parts of the country are also on the rise, but not to the same extent as the capital.

Earlier this year, the Housing Minister Jan O’Sullivan said that price of rented accommodation should be capped in line with the cost of living.

However the author of the Daft.ie report TCD economist Ronan Lyons said that the solution to the housing crisis is not capping rents as this will only limit the supply of new homes.
