'I wish you and I could sit down and talk': What's going on with David Lynch and Donald Trump?

David Lynch made a comment about Trump – and then said it was taken out of context when people disagreed with it.

FAMED DIRECTOR DAVID Lynch has said to Donald Trump he’d like to sit down and have a talk with him, after the US President retweeted an article about a controversial comment Lynch made about him.

Confused? Here’s what’s been happening.

Last week, Lynch told The Guardian that he was undecided about Trump but that:

He could go down as one of the greatest presidents in history because he has disrupted the thing so much. No one is able to counter this guy in an intelligent way.
Our so-called leaders can’t take the country forward, can’t get anything done. Like children, they are. Trump has shown all this.

The first part of the quote was subsequently reported by right-leaning Breitbart News, which was then tweeted by Trump.

Unsurprisingly, although Trump was happy at the apparent support, some Lynch fans were not.

At a rally in South Carolina, Trump then joked that Lynch’s career could be over for praising his presidency.

“Of course, there goes his career, right, in Hollywood,” said Trump.

Now Lynch has weighed in yet again, no doubt propelled by the fact his comment was criticised online for appearing to support Trump, although it was taken in isolation by some who re-reported it. Lynch has voted for Bernie Sanders before, and was presumed to be left-leaning, so to look like he supported or admired Trump was a shock to many fans.

Then in a Facebook post yesterday, Lynch appeared to clarify somewhat where he stands:

Dear Mr. President,

This is David Lynch writing. I saw that you re-tweeted the Breitbart article with the heading – Director David Lynch: Trump ‘Could Go Down as One of the Greatest Presidents in History.’ I wish you and I could sit down and have a talk. This quote which has traveled around was taken a bit out of context and would need some explaining.

Unfortunately, if you continue as you have been, you will not have a chance to go down in history as a great president. This would be very sad it seems for you – and for the country. You are causing suffering and division.

It’s not too late to turn the ship around. Point our ship toward a bright future for all. You can unite the country. Your soul will sing. Under great loving leadership, no one loses – everybody wins. It’s something I hope you think about and take to heart. All you need to do is treat all the people as you would like to be treated.

Sincerely,

David Lynch

Trump has not yet responded.

If it sounds a bit Lynchian, then you’re probably right – one of the world’s top cult directors appealing to a controversial president to have a chat with him. But would the resulting conversation make for some bizarre footage?
