Donald Trump has sacked Pam Bondi as US attorney general

The 60-year-old has drawn criticism for her handling of the Epstein files.

DONALD TRUMP HAS sacked Pam Bondi as US attorney general.

In a post on Truth Social, the US president said Bondi was “a Great American Patriot and a loyal friend” who had done a “tremendous job overseeing a massive crackdown in Crime across our Country”.

“We love Pam, and she will be transitioning to a much needed and important new job in the private sector, to be announced at a date in the near future,” he said.

US deputy attorney general Todd Blanche, Trump’s former personal lawyer, will serve as acting attorney general, he added.

Blanche said Bondi “led this Department with strength and conviction and I’m grateful for her leadership and friendship”.

It comes a month after he sacked Kristi Noem as homeland security secretary. She was replaced by Republican senator Markwayne Mullin.

In a statement on X, Bondi said she will be working “tirelessly” over the next month to transition the office to Blanche “before moving to an important private sector role I am thrilled about, and where I will continue fighting for President Trump and this Administration”.

She said leading Trump’s “historic and highly successful efforts to make America safer and more secure” had been “the honor of a lifetime” and “easily the most consequential first year of the Department of Justice in American history”.

“I remain eternally grateful for the trust that President Trump placed in me to Make America Safe Again.”

A staunch Trump ally, the 60-year-old has drawn criticism for her handling of the investigation into convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

According to several US media reports, who cited anonymous sources familiar with the matter, Trump had grown frustrated with Bondi.

NBC reported that he did not think she “executed on his vision” the way he wanted, while CNN said Trump told Bondi yesterday that he would be replacing her in the near future.

‘Stonewalled efforts to hold guilty accountable’

Reacting to the news, Democratic Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer wrote: “Good riddance.

“Pam Bondi was the wrong choice from the start. But the rot at the Department of Justice begins and ends with Donald Trump. As long as his focus is on using DOJ as a tool for revenge and not law enforcement, the cover up of the Epstein files, along with the countless other problems at DOJ, will continue,” Schumer said on X.

Schumer’s counterpart Hakeem Jeffries repeated this. “Pam Bondi has been fired. Good riddance. Pete Hegseth is next.”

Republican senator Nancy Mace – an outspoken critic of Bondi – said she “handled the Epstein Files in a terrible manner and seriously undermined President Trump”.

“She has stonewalled every effort to hold the guilty accountable. The American people deserve an Attorney General who is transparent and delivers real accountability.

“I look forward to a new Attorney General committed to getting justice for the victims of Jeffrey Epstein.”

Bondi, who was Florida’s attorney general from 2011 to 2019, and her justice department have been accused by Democrats of engaging in a cover-up in recent months over the release of the Epstein files.

She defended Trump against impeachment during his first term and helped push his false claims of 2020 election fraud as he sought to cling on to the White House after defeat by Joe Biden.

She joined Trump’s legal team during his first impeachment trial, in which he was alleged to have pressured Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky to find political dirt on Biden.

Trump was impeached by the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives but acquitted by the Republican-majority Senate.

According to The New York Times, Trump may name Lee Zeldin, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to be the next attorney general.
