GOOD EVENING

The 5 at 5 And low running costs too.

HYBRID VEHICLES USE two forms of energy to power the car: a rechargeable battery (which regenerates as you brake and coast) and a fuel engine. Typically, the engine is petrol powered but there are a few diesel hybrids on the market.

The appeal of hybrids is that you can usually travel short distances at slow speeds on pure electric power, meaning that most people should be able to do their rush hour daily commute without having to use a drop of petrol. The petrol engine kicks in when the car needs a bit more power, say for overtaking, or when the car reaches a certain speed or when the battery is running low.

This makes hybrids rather economical with fuel and cheap to run, especially because most of them fall into low tax bands.

Here are five hybrids on DoneDeal that you can buy, right now.

2017 Toyota Yaris, €19,240

The Toyota Yaris Hybrid is one of the most sensible cars you can buy if you live in an urban/suburban area. The Yaris Hybrid can disengage the petrol engine entirely and run solely on battery power in EV mode for 2km up to a speed of 50km/h. That means it is perfect for the crawling speeds experienced in most Irish cities.
