BIG HOLE

Massive potholes making Donegal road 'almost impassible' for local families

A local election candidate is calling for the re-introduction of the Local Improvement Scheme to fix roads like this all over the county.

EVERY COUNTY THINKS they have the biggest potholes in the land but we think this one in west Donegal might be the winner.

Local election candidate Micheal Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig went for a bit of a paddle in one of the potholes on a road in Arland this week (before the storm, we should add) to show just how bad the situation is for the families living in the area.

He told TheJournal.ie that the road is “almost impassible” for the ten families living along it.

“This road is in a shocking and unacceptable state and it is not alone.”

Donegal County Council classifies this road as a private road and Mac Giolla Easbuig has been told that there is no way it will see any repairs in the foreseeable future.

He is calling for the re-introduction of the Local Improvement Scheme (LIS) which provided for improvement work on non-public roads.

“Much is rightly said about the need to overcome the isolation of rural communities,” Mac Giolla Easbuig continued. “The sense of isolation and of being forgotten about is palpable in communities like this when they cannot even have proper access to their homes.”
