Suas is back: Dublin cable car 'a creative idea that needs to be debated'

The plan is back on the agenda after being shelved in 2006.

DUBLIN CITY COUNCIL will debate a motion later this afternoon that would pave the way for planning permission to be lodged to build a cable car along the banks of the Liffey.

The multi-million euro plan to run a cable car from Heuston Station down to the Docklands in Dublin city centre, dubbed ‘Suas’, was shelved in 2006.

However, Labour Councillor Dermot Lacey, who proposed the motion, believes the idea needs to be revisited, and in such a way to allow a “full and transparent debate” on the issue.

“We have to be more creative,” he said, “we have to support those who are creative and imaginative”.

“I think it’s an idea worth pursuing,” Lacey added, noting as a tourist attraction it could attract more visitors into the city.

Planning permission can not currently be submitted without approval from the council as the supports for the cable car would be located on public property.

There are a number of other issues what will need to be address, Lacey explained.

“There are issues of costs, but it would be a commercial development, and also the issue of the cables hanging in front of many historic buildings.”

“These are just problem areas that can be debated and potentially resolved. If not, nothing is being lost.”

The motion will be discussed at the South East Area Committee Meeting at 3pm.

What do you think? Should a cable car be built along the Liffey?
