DUBLIN CITY COUNCILLORS are to vote tomorrow night on a motion which would see the council become the latest to call for full marriage equality for same-sex couples.

A motion on the agenda for tomorrow night’s meeting, if approved, would see the Council support “the same rights and entitlements to civil marriages for all citizens of Dublin regardless of race, religion or sexuality”.

Identically-worded motions have been tabled by the council’s Sinn Féin and Labour groupings.

Sinn Féin’s Larry O’Toole called on the 52-member council to support the motion unanimously.

“Marriage equality for all should have the full support of Dublin City Council in recognition of the equal rights of all citizens,” he said.

“Same-sex couples in particular are discriminated against under the present legislation – the time for change is now.”

The motion follows the unanimous approval of a similar motion by Cork City Council in its July meeting – a move which saw Cork become the first local authority to formally support full marriage for same-sex couples. Sinn Féin also tabled that motion.

A Labour councillor told TheJournal.ie, however, that he had been told that the motion could be defeated at tomorrow’s meeting.

Labour and Fine Gael control the council, accounting for 31 of its 52 members. Labour party policy supports full marriage for same-sex couples, while Fine Gael’s last party conference voted to refer the matter to the Constitutional Convention.

A Dáil motion approved in July formally added same-sex marriage to the list of topics to be discussed by the convention whenever it begins its sittings.

Several cabinet ministers, including Eamon Gilmore, Alan Shatter and Leo Varadkar, have all previously spoken of their support for gay marriage.

I think you’ll find that after years of opposing it, Leo Varadkar said recently that if there was a referendum on gay marriage, he would “probably support it.” Not quite open support but more like testing public opinion.

Ah that’s a grand bit of gayness:) hope it gets through! Seriously, we will look back at all this in years to come, when everyone is treated equally and wonder what all the fuss was about and why it took so long to sort it out.

  • Good to hear and hopefully it will pass, it will keep the pressure on the government to introduce marriage equality and protect our partners, children and families.
Come on Labour, you made a promise!

  • Just live and let live….and everyone can be happy! :)

  • Aren’t the shinners tabling motions in Fermanagh and Belfast as well, following on from the Cork one. They seem to be getting a national momentum going. Fair play.

They and others on the left have been plugging away on equal rights for gays for a very long time.

    • They already have the motion passed in Belfast, lots more tabled

    • Sinn Fein have already tabled a motion in Belfast and it was passed. Newry/

    • They still can’t accept motions passed by the National Parliament as evidenced by their incitement of citizens to break the law in respect of the Household Charge. Any so called Motion by them before a Local Authority is merely a stunt for which they will have no statutorily responsibility and accountability. In the same way they assist in the levy of property taxes or rates in the North while they incite others to break the law in the Republic by not paying a lawfully imposed tax. This Party is dishonest and shoddy in their behaviour. They are a threat to a civilised society.

  • @BPDeasey , equality is not “wrong” and just because you post on a forum doesn’t make you ” right”

  • Fair play to Sinn Féin, they are really leading the way on this issue. I hope that the Council pass this motion, its a no brainer really. Its passing will remove another barrier to equal marraige rights for all

  • Great to see . Hope it gets passed. Would be interesting to note what way councillors vote and see if they tow party line. FG might reject it but Labour and others should pass.

  • Well done Sinn Féin, leading the way in progressive thought in this country despite the current establishment (FF/FG) doing everything they can to discredit them. And they say Sinn Féin lives in the past…

Have a look at their online shop and you will see that they are very much living in the past. The idea that Sinn Fein are leading the way in progressive thought in this country is utter bollocks.
I hope this motion is carried by the way.

    • They have a history they’re proud of, but they aren’t tabling motions on Pádraig Pearse or Laois-made Bodhrán’s they are tabling motions on real issues facing this country including equality & bank debt. That’s not living in the past.

    • They abstained on a vote on abortion at Donegal County Council.
Cowardly bastards, saying one thing nationally and another locally.
No different from the other parties.

    • Barry, they don’t support abortion on demand.

Criticism is all well and good but they never “said one thing and did the other” because they have never came out in support of abortion. Your comment is blatantly untrue and misrepresentation of the real facts.

They were however the only other party in the Dáil to back the ULA proposal to allow a legal framework for abortion where a women’s life is at risk.

Another case of people shooting their mouth off without knowning the full facts.

  • Why the hell would Dublin City Council have any say in this?!

  • supporting it in what capacity? isnt it already a legal reality? why should the council be voting on this issue at all? am i wrong in my assumption that it is legal for same sex couples to be married?

  • It’s wrong. And just cause the councillors pass a motion approving it doesn’t make it right!!!

    • Would you care to explain why it’s wrong, because just repeating that homosexuality and marriage quality is wrong over and over again ad nauseum doesn’t make it wrong either.
Can you actually show how this would harm you or your family because most of use can only see how this would help protect some families that currently are quite vulnerable.

    • I don’t get how 2 men can be attracted to each other, sorry, i just don’t but that is the thing, it happens, that is who they are. just because I don’t get it, not my problem. I’ve enough of my own. If Oliver and Mark want to live together as a couple, and a publicly declared one, be happy, respect each other, then best of look to them.

Why have a problem with people who are prob. good decent skins. Let them have their own worries and you, yours. It is hard enough to be a good person in this world, never mind worrying about others.

Indeed, and why are councillers involved in this at all. Supporting the redesignation of this cornerstone of society is beyond thier remit. Insane.
