Seanad Abolition

Dublin set to reject Seanad abolition as referendum result to be tight

Too close to call is the word of the day.

THE SEANAD ABOLITION referendum is likely to be a lot closer than was expected with it expected to fall in Dublin where many constituencies in the capital appear to have rejected the proposal to scrap the upper house.

Tallies from across the  capital indicate a strong No vote but the outlook across the rest of the country is not as clear.

The vote is likely to be a lot tighter than had been anticipated and the turnout higher than expected, beating the 33 per cent turnout in the Children’s referendum last November.

Already the Labour Party director of elections Alex White has conceded that the Yes side is likely to be defeated in Dublin region based on tallies so far this morning.

He said that the overall picture across the country is “trending No” but was not definitive on the outcome.

Earlier, Fine Gael’s deputy director of elections Regina Doherty told RTÉ “it’s not over till the Fat Lady sings”.

Official results are expected later this afternoon with a result also expected in the Court of Appeal referendum.

Ballots in that referendum are not yet being counted but it is expected to pass.
