One dead and several injured after Dutch train derails

Images of the accident show carriages lying on their side next to fields.

AT LEAST ONE person is dead and 10 people injured after a passenger train derailed near the Dutch town of Dalfsen this morning, local officials said.

The train went into a field at around 8.45am after toppling over when it hit a crane at a crossing.

The injured are not thought to be in a life-threatening condition.

Photos of the scene, around 120 kilometres east of Amsterdam, show a number of passenger cars lying on their side following the collision.

The mayor of the town said between 10 and 15 people were on board at the time of the accident, which happened on a line between the cities of Zwolle and Emmen.
