Love Hurts

Here's how to make your children work for their Easter eggs

What better way to work off a smidgen of the calories consumed over Easter than with an old fashioned egg hunt.

THIS SUNDAY ISN’T just any ‘ol Sunday. Trust us.

Not only is it the last day of the first month of Spring *wipes snow off shoulder* but is, of course, Easter Sunday.

Here’s a simple equation to sum up what this means to children…

Chocolate intake = Child’s own body weight

If the only exercise that your children are going to get this Easter weekend is the stairs, we at TheJournal.ie have a few suggestions to help them work up that appetite for chocolate.

While they’re at it, they may even get another egg (or two) out of it.

I mean, who doesn’t need 13 eggs?

Dublin

From Sunday to Tuesday, Dublin Zoo will have even more to keep children entertained, with face painting, arts and crafts and an ‘Easter Bunny disco’ on the Sunday. We have no idea what this means but it sounds absolutely delightful.

If you want to see actual chickens as you eat Easter eggs, Newbridge house and farm has you covered. With its very own tea rooms, Mammy and Daddy can take a load off and enjoy their own Easter treat.

Mayo Madness

If you’re asking yourself where’s the one place in Ireland this Sunday where you can combine an Easter bunny named Pinkie and a pirate adventure park, we say: What an odd question!

We do have an answer, however. Westport House in, eh, Westport, is running their very own Easter egg treasure hunt, where the first 250 children to complete the hunt will get an Easter egg. We’re pretty sure this is the definition of the word motivation.

Delicious History in Wexford

History and chocolate… together at last.

If you’re looking to make history lessons that little bit sweeter (badum) and more digestible (tish) for your children, then look no further than The Irish National Heritage Park at Ferrycarrig, Co. Wexford.

Its egg hunt includes roaming through ancient dwellings looking for clues to where the chocolate is stashed. With over 9,000 years of history to catch up on, your children’s brains will get a good workout before they get their well deserved egg.

SPECIAL EASTER EGG HUNT WARNING: This egg hunt is on Saturday only, so get your skates on.

Longing for Longford

Ardagh or, more specifically, the Ardagh Heritage and Creativity Centre, is the location for their ‘Mad March Hares and April Fools’ event.’

Combining an Easter egg hunt with an art workshop, children will have plenty to keep them entertained, while adults can gorge on the tea and coffee they need to help counteract not having slept properly since [INSERT THE YEAR IN WHICH YOUR OLDEST CHILD WAS BORN HERE].

Crack up in Clare

For those of you who want to do a little something for charity this Easter (while still keeping your children entertained), Nevsail Watersports are having their annual Easter egg hunt on Kilkee beach in aid of mental health organisation AWARE.

SPECIAL EASTER EGG HUNT WARNING: This egg hunt is on Saturday only, so get your skates on.

All is not lost, however, as Craggaunowen in Co Clare is doing its own thing on Easter Sunday. ‘The Living Past Experience’ features a puppet show, Easter eggs and a bouncy castle.

Eh, it might be best to eat the Easter egg after the bouncy castle.

Galway Games

Kylemore Abbey in Co Galway plans to make children work for their Easter treat, as they are let loose within the six acres of Victorian walled gardens in its grounds. As every parent knows, a tired child is a happy parent.

And there we have it. Lots of Easter suggestions, and we didn’t even fall into the trap of saying ‘eggcellent’ once… d’oh.
