Michael McNamara has been selected by the Labour Party as a general election candidate for Clare. A farmer and qualified barrister, the 36-year-old's only previous electoral experience came in 2007 when he contested the European elections as an independent candidate for the North-West constituency. On that occasion, he was eliminated on the first count despite securing almost 13,000 first preferences.
