Fine Gael's Sean Barrett will be hoping to secure a ninth term in Dáil Eireann when his Dun Laoighaire constituents go to the polls on March 11th. With the exception of the 2002 general election in which he did not stand, Barrett has been returned at every general election since 1981. He held the portfolio of Minister for Sport from 1982 to 1987 as well as serving as Minister for Defence and the Marine from 1994 to 1997. Most recently, he was appointed as Fine Gael's spokesperson on Foreign Affairs in July 2010.
