Fianna Fáil's Shane Cassells is standing as one of the party's two nominees in Meath West. Cassells was the party's nominee in a 2005 by-election held to fill the seat left vacant by John Bruton's appointment as European Ambassador. Despite receiving over 32 per cent of first preferences, Cassells was defeated by the Fine Gael candidate Shane McEntee. He has served as a member of Navan urban district council since 1999 and as a member of Meath County Council since 2004
