Well, even if they’re not working it’s their choice if they don’t want to watch it. Not everyone is into it and certainly not nearly as many people as you would imagine.

I think the Leinster thing is a big reason why rugby in Ireland gets a bad name and I can see why. There has been some serious bandwagon hopping going on since they started to become successful, which I suppose is natural enough…it happens in other sports too. But there’s something about the ‘D4/come on goys’ thing that irks a lot of people, even within rugby itself as you have people who don’t know the first thing about sport talking utter shite.
A couple of people above have been hammered for talking about the elitist thing but there’s still an element of that, in Dublin anyway.
I think the game has reached its peak here though. Kids might get into it but they won’t get too far if they’re not willing to do weights/take creatine at a time in life when their bodies are not able for it. Some of the Frankenstein’s monsters walking around Dublin are downright scary.
Having said that, I hope Brian O’Driscoll gets to end his career on a high. The man is a genuine Irish legend, I have the utmost respect for him.

Or we live in a democracy and not North Korea, D4 heads need to step out of their privileged bubble every now and again, there’s another world outside McSorley’s and Kiely’s guys!

Soccer is a poser sport full of whimps. I Love how irish soccer fans support man utd or one of thoese clubs like they live there. When the internationals are on they boo rooney etc when playing with utd they love him and would die for him.

I like both sports but football has more serious injuries than rugby, when you take a full sliding tackle you will know all about it. Clean breaks and features all the time, I’ve seen bone sticking out of legs in football matches. Just the same as rugby you would not like to take a full on tackle from and New Zealander or South African big men those lads. Both spurts dangerous in the own way. I’ve played both at a high level standard.

I dunno Martin mac, I know of half a dozen young lads paralysed from playing rugby…I always assumed it was the more dangerous sport. Especially now as soccer players can hardly get within a foot of each other without a booking being given and it’s become a softer game. Or is it dependent on what level it’s being played at?

U know 6 people paralysed from rugby?? Really?? Cos I can only recall 1 in the last 6 years or so, thankfully its a freak occurance still despite the game getting physically bigger by the week.

Yes Cian, really. I know ‘of’ two from schools my brother attended and another young lad from an opposing team their school was playing. Also most people probably remember the tragic case of Stuart Mangan. So thats 4 that I can think of off the top of my head. I’m sure sadly that there’s more, I wasn’t saying that 6 a year happen just that in response to Martin Mac’s comment, rugby in my opinion is a more dangerous sport.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to sound like I didn’t believe u. Tone is hard to type. I was genuinely surprised at how many. The reason why I was surprised is that between 1995 and 2004 there were 12 incidents of spinal injury, 4 of which led to paralysis across all grades of Irish rugby. Anecdotally, I believe there had been far fewer since due to changes in tackle laws, s&c practice’s and greater on field levels of care but haven’t any stats to back that up… Its always a risk with contact sports but there are far more injuries in certain sports. For instance ac and cruciate injuries for GAA, leg breaks in soccer. Its unfortunate that rugby’s worst case injury is so serious…

Cage fighting is the highest skilled sport in the world, you have to master at least 4 different combat arts: boxing, Muay Thai, wrestling and Brazilian ju jitsu, plus all the strength and conditioning. So I’m taking the rugby comparison as a compliment.

They will play the team anthem, because as you might be aware the team represents two jurisdictions. The national anthem is that of the state which is not representative of the whole of Ireland. But there will be one Irish team fighting together under the same anthem, and I wouldn’t care if that was to Baa Baa Blacksheep. It’s just a song. Are we going to split the Irish rugby team over what notes are played at away games?
