Over 18,000 jobs created by Enterprise Ireland supported firms in 2013

Full-time employment levels in these companies are the highest since 2007 and total employment is the highest recorded in the last decade.

COMPANIES SUPPORTED BY Enterprise Ireland created 18,033 new jobs in 2013, according to its end of year statement, published today.

The statement reveals that there was a net increase of 5,442 in the number of people employed by these companies – the highest net gain for Irish firms in the last decade. Enterprise Ireland said this was primarily due to strong export performance.

Enterprise Ireland supported companies now, directly and indirectly, account for more than 300,000 jobs in the Irish economy, or 16 per cent of the workforce.

Total direct employment in Enterprise Ireland client companies stood at 175,750 in 2013. Of these, 149,718 are full-time jobs, while 26,032 are part-time. The full-time employment levels are the highest since 2007 and total employment is the highest recorded in the last decade.

Leaner, stronger and more capable

“Throughout the year, Irish exporting companies demonstrated perseverance, patience and determination when facing severe global economic conditions,” Enterprise Ireland said today. “We are now in a position where we have a client base leaner, stronger and more capable than ever before to compete on the global stage.”

A key focus has been in supporting companies to increase their export business with a number of minister-led trade missions with the number of these doubling the average during the period 2007-2011.

Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton described the figures as “brilliant news” and “a great testament to the hard work and ingenuity if our business-people and workers”.

“This is the second year in a row that employment in Irish exporting companies has shown significant growth, after several years in which jobs were shed,” he said. “These results – the latest in a line of positive indicators for the Irish economy – give confidence for the future.”
