IRELAND ISSUED 180 European extradition warrants between 2005 and 2009, while almost 70 suspects were extradited from European countries to this country, according to a European Commission report.
The figures are shown in an article by Mary Fitzgerald in today’s Irish Times.
European member states issued 54, 689 European arrest warrants during the same four-year period.
Among those who surrendered as a result of the warrants were a German serial killer caught in Spain and a gang of armed robbers sought by Italy.
In total, the warrant led to 69 people being extradited to Ireland.
The European arrest warrant was introduced in 2004 and enables the extradition of suspected offenders from one EU member state to another.
