HERE ARE THE things you need to know as we round off the day in three easy steps

THINGS WE LEARNED

#NOBEL PRIZE: We’re all winners tonight as the European Union was officially awarded the Nobel Peace Prize at a ceremony in Oslo today. Our own Enda Kenny was in attendance as the Norwegian committee which determines the winner recognised the decades of stability and peace on the continent despite the recent financial malaise.

#ARRESTS: Seven people have been arrested in connection with the death of Shane Rossiter who was shot at a house in the Tipperary village of Golden in October. Five men and two women were detained in the Tipperary area today.

#BUDGET 2013: It may have been last week but the effects of the Budget are still being felt in the Labour Party as one of its MEPs warned this morning that the vote on the social welfare bill, which will enshrine the cut to child benefit, this week is “becoming increasingly volatile”.

#ROYAL HOAX: The two DJs behind the hoax call to the hospital where Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, was being treated have apologised to the family of a nurse who connected the call and who was later found dead. Michael Christian said that he and colleague Mel Greig were “shattered, gutted, and heartbroken” following Jacintha Saldanha’s death.

#BUS DEATH: A man has been charged with manslaughter following the death of Eoghan Dudley, who was hit by a bus on the junction of Dawson Street and Nassau Street last week. Edward Connors, who is deaf, appeared in court today where his application for free legal aid, medical and interpretation services was granted and he will appear in court again on Thursday, RTÉ reports.

#PHOTO FEUD: If you’re an Instagram user then you may have noticed that photos you tweet are no longer integrated with Twitter meaning it takes that little bit longer to view tweeted snaps of your dinner or whatever. The move is designed to get more people visiting Instagram but it could also be linked to Facebook’s recent purchase of the photo-sharing app.

THINGS WE LOVED

  • The Guardian has delivered the verdict on some of the celebrity autobiographies that could be in your Christmas stocking this year and even determined which is the best, includes Rod Stewart and Tulisa.
  • This story involves a monkey dressed in a dapper shearling coat and a nappy and being lost in Ikea. Best of all, someone took a picture of it and of course there is a meme.
  • We love a bit of Boris Johnson here at TheJournal.ie so we just had to show you this excellent picture of the London Mayor boarding one of the first trains on a new London Overground extension in the English capital:

THINGS WE SHARED

  • We weren’t sharing much after Google’s web-based email service went down earlier today for around 15 minutes. No biggie but Twitter was going off its head. The company has since apologised for the outage.
  • This shocking story, courtesy of ABC News, of the women who were called ‘fat girls’ on their restaurant receipt. “I got the bill, I was looking at bill [and] I was like, ‘Why does this receipt say ‘fat girls?’” said customer Christine Dura.
  • Are you a student? Were you a student at one point? Do you know a student? If you’ve answered ‘yes’ to one of these then you’ll like this:
