Lithuanian man extradited from the north to face Monaghan rape charges

He is expected to appear before a court in Ireland today.

A LITHUANIAN MAN arrested at Belfast Airport has been extradited from the north to stand trial in Ireland.

The 21-year-old is accused of rape and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The offences occurred in the Castleblaney area of County Monaghan on 30 March, 2015.

The man was detected entering Northern Ireland at Belfast International Airport on 29 July 2016, after arriving on a flight from Vilnius, Lithuania. He was detained and arrested by virtue of a European Arrest Warrant issued by Ireland on the same date.

At the time of detection at Belfast International Airport the man assaulted a member of staff from the UK Border Agency. He was subsequently convicted of this offence on 15 November.

Following an extradition case, an order was made by the court and the man was handed over to An Garda Siochana this morning.

He is expected to appear before a court in Ireland today.
