Father of Savita Halappanavar 'calls for change in abortion law'

Andanappa Yalagi spoke to the media about his daughter’s tragic death, and said he intends on taking legal action against the hospital in which Savita died.

THE FATHER OF Savita Halappanavar, who died after suffering a miscarriage at a Galway hospital, has appealed for a change in Ireland’s abortion laws.

Savita’s husband Praveen said last week that his wife had been refused a termination of her pregnancy while undergoing the miscarriage. She died of septicemia.

Yesterday, between 10 – 12,000 people turned out for a protest in Savita’s name in Dublin, with hundreds more attending vigils and rallies around the country.

Andanappa Yalagi spoke to the Observer from Belgaum, India, and made a personal plea to Taoiseach Enda Kenny. According to the newspaper, he said: “Please change the law on abortion, which will help to save the lives of so many women in the future.”

According to the paper, Yalagi intends on taking legal action against the hospital in which Savita died.

An international expert has joined the inquiry team reviewing Savita’s death, the HSE said earlier this week. Today, Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Health, Billy Kelleher TD repeated his party’s call for an independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Savita Halappanavar.

Sinn Féin is to table a motion calling for legislation for the X Case in the wake of Savita’s death.
