id="liveblog-363198">

19.42 - Good evening, you’ve joined us just in time for kick off in St Jacob park, Basle.

Both teams are just listening to that lovely Champions League music itching to get playing some ball.

19.44 - Here are those all important team-sheets for your perusal:

Basel: Sommer, Steinhofer, Abraham, Dragovic, Park, Shaqiri, Huggel, Xhaka, Fabian Frei, Alexander Frei, Streller.

Subs: Colomba, Degen, Kovac, Stocker, Cabral, Andrist, Zoua.

Bayern Munich: Neuer, Rafinha, Boateng, Badstuber, Lahm, Tymoschuk, Alaba, Robben, Kroos, Ribery, Gomez.

Subs: Butt, Pranjic, Gustavo, Petersen, Olic, Muller, Can.

19.49 - Bayern straight into their rhythm here and franck Ribery should have given them the lead.

Robben played in the Frenchman who brilliantly dropped a shoulder to slip his marker six yards out. The keeper was able to spread himself and divert the shot away.

19.52 - Up the other end and Basle have a half-hearted penatly claim as Rafinha tackles Streller. Move along nothing to see here.

19.55 - Bayern are getting whistle at every touch, but look well in control wearing their uber-cool black kit.

Shaqiri is an inch away from getting a clear-cut chance, but Boateng gets in a vital desperate tackle to steal the ball away.

19.58 - Yann Sommer is earning his francs tonight. Phil Lamb wins posession at the edge of basle area and slips Ribery in on the left edge of the area.

He really should have taken one of his two chances; coming in on his right foot, Sommer bats it behind for a corner.

20.03 - Another deflected cross from the right almost pays dividends for Basle. Steinhofer whips in the ball deflected by Lamb and it bounces chest high. Streller pokes it goalwards but Neuer stands tall.

From the corner Basel are within millimetres of the lead. Streller again the man thwarted, his point blank header tipped onto the post by the German keeper.

20.05 - I do not believe this. Frei has just smashed the ball against the underside of the bar.

Park picked out the striker with a lovely angled pass along the deck.

The striker whipped his left foot around the ball and it looked destined for the top corner, but somehow came back out.

20.08 - Basel’s movement in attack is causing all sorts of trouble for the visitors.

The latest attack though is called back for offside, Frei a little too excited and doesn’t hold his run from Streller’s through ball.

20.15 - Hell of a game this. it could easily be 3-3.

Sommer is called into action again after Frei lost possession and Robben dribbled his way up the right wing.

Alaba gets the shot in from distance, good save.

20.22 - Ribery v Sommer III

Same result, Sommer saves from a low 25 yard blast from the former Marseille star.

20.26 - Five minutes before half time and Bayern are enjoying a good spell of possession and territory.

With the game less stretched now though, Basel are able to commit plenty of bodies to get in the way.

20.31 - Amazingly, the half time whistle has gone in St Jakob Park and we are scoreless.

It could well stay that way if the last five minutes are anything to go by, but chances aplenty otherwise.

20.47 - Strap yourselves in, the second half is under way.

No changes made by either coach.

20.51 - Shaqiri with an early reminder of why Bayern want him. A nice little turn of pace on the left wing and digs out a cross.

Streller gets room to head the ball, but it’s easily saved by Neuer.

20.52 - In case you’re wondering: Marseille v Inter Milan has also just restarted after half time. It’s goalless there ‘n all.

21.04 - Those last five minutes of the first half now look like they were a pretty good preview.

Much less exciting since the break, Alaba has just drove a shot wide from distance.

But wait, Robben has a half chance to dribble at a defender. Free kick right on the edge of the area…

21.07 - Scramble. Robben smashes his shot at the feet of the wall and his follow up volley is blocked too.

Ribery keeps the pressure on, heading back towards goal. Gomez attempts an over head kick and connects, but it’s weak and straight at Sommer.

21.10 - Ooh, Lamb comes close to a spectacular opener. The fullback cut in from the left and let fly with his right foot.

Once again Sommer has the answer. This game will need a howler of a mistake or a precise finish. These goalkeepers are both in fine form.

21.13 - Hmm, Franck Ribery storms off as his number is put up on the substitution board.

Thomas Muller is his replacement.

21.15 - Muller is instantly in the action and is booked.

His through ball from the left wing puts Gomez through one-on-one, another save.

The ball rebounded high and Muller, following him up threw himself up bravely to try and head the ball / rattle a confident keeper.

Muller is booked, Sommer gets a short bout of treatment and we’re back in action.

21.20 - Tymoschuk with a horrendous pass in midfield has the home side breaking towards goal. Luckily for him Boateng cuts out the cross from Shaqiri and it lands back at the feet of Tymoschuk. He misplaces another pass, but his team-mate wins it back quickly.

Bayern are trying to build up a head of steam, Muller has definitly made them more direct and he links with Lamb who in turn feeds Robben.

The winger changes pace to fashion a shot left of the six yard box but this time it is blocked.

21.21 - You have to hand it to Basel, they are not phased by anyone.

Streller charges down Lamb and races to the by-line. His cross for Frei is just about hooked away.

21.23 - Just under 10 minutes to go in Basel. A little more than that in Marseille. Did I mention there were no goals in either game? Sigh.

21.29 - GOAL! Basel take a deserved lead.

Zoua is only just on the field and he dribbles unchecked along the German’s 18 yard line and slips through ball left for Stocker, another substitute with a cleanly struck left-foot drive between Neuer’s legs.

21.31 - Bayern are chasing this now, the crowd are baying for a red card as Muller continues to throw his weight around – just a talking to.

Ivica Olic is on the field to provide some extra firepower.

21.33 - This is going to the wire. Rafinha’s cross finds Robben. he Lamb and Olic all have touches in the box, but their back is to goal.

Zoua takes an air-shot at a clearance and knees Olic in the face. It’s a funny old game.

21.35 - The flags are waving with glee in St Jakob Park. The home side are running down the clock with a corner in enemy territory.

21.36 - FULL TIME: There you have it, Basel pull off another shock win in the Champions League. 1 -0 thanks to a very well taken goal from Valentin Stocker.

21.41 - This Basel outfit fear nobody. Munich must be confident of getting a result in the return leg, but they fancied their chances here too.

Impossible to argue this victory was not deserved, but it could have been very different had Franck Ribery taken any of his glorious early chances.

Still, there were chances not taken at either end. Basel hit the inside of the woodwork twice in that opening period so, on that basis, they thoroughly deserve to take a lead back across the Rhein.

21.45 - There was also a late goal in Marseille. The hosts win their first leg thanks to and Andre Ayew shoulder.

Thanks for logging on folks, these two ties are well in the balance.

Both Marseille and Basel left it late, but they each have something to protect when they cross the border for the second leg.

<a

It did not identify the child’s remains, but only one child’s name was on the list of the missing.

The agency also said that five of the bodies discovered today could not be removed from the ship due to worsening weather.

The operation to remove fuel from the ship continues and there have been no signs of any serious pollution resulting from the incident.

Around 4,200 passengers and crew were on board the luxury liner when it struck rocks off the Tuscan island of Giglio, tearing a hole in the hull which caused the ship to list and capsize.

The cause of the Costa Concordia crash is still being investigated by Italian authorities and the ship’s captain remains under house arrest.

- Additional reporting by the AP

Watch: was defeated (53.3 per cent voted ‘no’). A second referendum held that day – on amending the constitution to allow for the reduction of judges’ salaries – passed with 79.7 per cent voting ‘yes’.

For the group’s research, 1,005 people adults around Ireland were interviewed using random digit dialling, of which half were contacted via mobile and the other half on a landline. It also used four focus groups comprised of ten people.

Speaking on behalf of the panel, Marsh said that almost half of the ‘yes’ voters questioned (42 per cent) said they couldn’t recall the arguments made for the motion, while the same percentage of ‘no’ voters couldn’t remember the arguments against.

At the same time, large numbers of voters were apparently uncertain about who was making any arguments for (50 per cent of the voters questions) or against (57 per cent) the motion.

The panel’s report, which was prepared for the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform, said that “overall, the numbers of people unable to explain why they voted ‘no’ beyond saying they did not know what the referendum was about is remarkable, and would seem to reflect poorly on the effectiveness of the campaign itself.”

Marsh said that while there is a tendency in many countries to use a referendum to vote against the government, the fact that the second referendum being put to the electorate that day had passed made it difficult to ascertain if this was a significant factor in the ‘no’ vote. There will also be a court for quiet reflection, Museum Director Lonnie Bunch said.

“We will have stories that will make you smile and stories that will make you cry,” he told The Associated Press. “In a positive sense, this will be an emotional roller coaster, so you want to give people chances to reflect and to think about what this means to them.”

Here’s Obama’s speech, courtesy of <a

The Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources made the comment in opening remarks at a Seanad discussion on media standards today.

He said that “we’ve gone from excessive deference to corrosive cynicism”. He said that there was once an air of deference towards institutions like the Church or Government but;

The age of deference is over now.

Rabbitte said that the incessant promotion of “cynical” discourse about politics went on in the boom years too and he found it to be “destructive of both politics and journalism”. He acknowledged that journalism had come under pressure from reduced resources and the immediacy of internet publishing but derided what he said had led to a decline in specialist journalists and an increase in “mildly reworked press releases” and “copy and paste journalism” in all media.

He also suggested that while “some” online media outlets were signed up to the Press Council, the rise of online media might lead to the establishment of a code to which outlets can sign up to if they wish to adhere to guidelines.

Following Rabbitte’s speech, several senators gave their take on the need for regulation of media – and the concerns and challenges facing the industry. Independent Senator David Norris gave the most forceful contribution to the Seanad, saying that he felt media had bullied public figures. He also claimed that a tabloid editor told him that stories published about him at the time of his presidential run were “payback time” for his defence of “victims of invasion of privacy”. Read more of that contribution here.

In a response to Norris, the minister said that while the points he raised about bullying were “very serious”, he could not accept “that we have sunk to the standards in this country such as we have seen in the neighbouring island (as evidenced in the Leveson Inquiry)”.

He also claimed that the Press Council had been working well and had only been in place for four years so needed more of a chance. When it was first established, a Privacy Act had been mooted to operate alongside the Council but that suggestion was rejected. Since then, the approach had been one of ‘suck-it-and-see’ and let it work as a “non-statutory Press Council”.

Some of the senators making statements yesterday had other questions for the Minister to consider:

Paschal Mooney (FF) asked if the future of investigative journalism needed to be looked at, claiming that investigative journalism was under severe threat because of some mistakes made but that it should be at the core of democracy.

Michael Mullins (FG) asked if the family of the deceased Brother Gerard Dillon, against whom allegations were also made in the Mission to Prey Prime Time Investigates programme, should not be allowed to have their complaint to the BAI allowed. It had been returned because it had not been made within the statutory 30-day limit.

Aideen Hayden (Lab) wondered if the Government would consider reporting a ‘Buy Irish’ campaign to ensure people would buy Irish newspapers – she had praised the Irish press for not publishing salacious stories about politicians’ private lives as the press in some other countries do.

Fidelma Healy Eames (FG) asked if the Government is going to legislate on social media as while its positive effect was clear in the “Twitter revolutions” in Moldova and during the Arab Spring, there was an issue between the boundary of freedom of speech and privacy and safety. She was also interested in whether the Press Ombudsman had remit over regional press.

John Whelan (Lab), a journalist and regional newspaper editor for 30 years, claimed that the Press Ombudsman “really has no powers” and that he had himself been subject to a story of misinformation. He said that it should be the case that the taxpayer and the Government be entitled “to ask what bang are we getting for our buck” from the State broadcaster. He also had strong words about political spin doctors coming on radio and TV programmes “masquerading” as independent commentators.

Trevor O Clochartaigh (SF) was concerned about the meshing of the wealthy and the media in Ireland and that journalists have a “duty to highlight issues which would not otherwise be in the public domain”. He was concerned about “inaccurate pillorying” of the public sector in “certain Sunday publications”.

Paul Coghlan (FG), who declared that he is a small shareholder in a radio station in Kerry, asked if perhaps smaller county broadcaster should also be in line for State funding in order to ensure a “level playing pitch”.

Susan O’Keefe (Lab), a former BBC investigative journalist, also wondered if part of the licence fee could be given to local radio stations, “many of which perform within a public broadcasting remit”. She also asked if the code of fairness and impartiality which is being explored at the moment would be effective.

Ronan Mullen (Ind) asked Pat Rabbitte if his perception of the Press Council as a “reasonable success” was based on any particular process of assessment within the Department. He also asked if such assessment would be enough to determine what should happen with proposed privacy legislation.

John Crown (Ind) said that on the issue of “hypothetical intrusiveness” by the media, as far as he was concerned, they didn’t intrude enough in some areas which are of critical importance such as in the area of his own ‘day job’, the provision of cancer services. He said a free press is “one of the most important things that we have” and that there should be ways to enforce the responsibility of the media to expose wrongdoing.

<a

Rescuers carved open the roof and set up a pulley system to ease them out one by one.

The commuter train came in too fast and hit the barrier at the end of the platform at about 26 kph, smashing the front of the engine and crunching the leading cars behind it; one car penetrated nearly 20 feet into the next, Argentina’s transportation secretary, JP Schiavi told reporters at the station.

The conductors’ union chief, Omar Maturano, told Radio 10 that the train might have come in as fast as 30 kph.

‘Windows exploded’

The first car, where passengers make space for bicycles, was the most damaged in the crash. Survivors told the TeleNoticias channel that many people were injured in a jumble of metal and glass.

Passengers said windows exploded as the tops of train cars separated from their floors. The trains are usually packed with people standing between the seats, and passengers were thrown into each other and to the floor by the force of the hard stop.

Many of those on board suffered bruises, and many with lesser injuries were waiting for attention on the Once station’s platforms as helicopters and more than a dozen ambulances took the most seriously injured to nearby hospitals.

“This machine left the shop yesterday and the brakes worked well. From what we know, it braked without problems at previous stations. At this point I don’t want to speculate about the causes,” Ruben Sobrero, union chief on the Sarmiento line, told Radio La Red.

The motorman has been hospitalised and the union hasn’t been able to speak with him yet, Sobrero added.

The 5 at 5: Wednesday

Irish

5 at 5

Carlow

David Norris

Fire

Google

Marie Colvin

Media

State Assets

Syria

Take 5

Terminator vision

sell-off State assets in the hope of raising some €3 billion in proceeds, a third of which will go towards creating jobs. The Taoiseach Enda Kenny said today that it was unlikely any State body would be sold off this year as the opposition criticised the proposals.

2. #CARLOW: The bodies of two men have been discovered at neighbouring farms in Carlow. Firefighters responded to reports of a fire at Ballycormack at around 4am where they found the body of a man in his 70s. A few hours later the body of a man in his 6os was found on a second farm nearby.

3. #SYRIA: The doyen of foreign correspondents Marie Colvin has died in Syria. The Sunday Times journalist died in heavy shelling in the Baba Amr district of Homs, a city under siege by pro-Bashar Assad forces. A French photographer Remi Ochlik also died in the attack as did dozens of other residents of the city.

4. #MEDIA: Senator David Norris has said that a tabloid editor told him that stories published about him were “payback time” during a debate on media standards in Ireland in the Seanad today. The former presidential candidate made the allegation in a blistering speech that included criticism of the Press Council and the government for a lack of regulation of media in Ireland.

5. #TERMINATOR VISION: Google is planning to launch a pair of electronic glasses that would project information directly in front of your eyes. The goggles would work in much the same away as a smart phone but would include motion and location sensors. The price? Well reportedly as low as $250.

One in four would be embarrassed to have counselling – survey

Irish

Age Action

Counselling

Health

IACP

Irish Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists

Mental Health

Older People

Personal difficulties

Psychotherapy
<guid

Forty-nine per cent of over-65s said they would talk problems over with a friend or family member, while the figure for adults overall was 70 per cent.

One in seven over-65s have attended counselling or psychotherapy, compared to one in four adults overall.

Among women, 30 per cent have visited a counsellor or psychotherapist at least once. Among men the figure was 19 per cent.

A spokesperson for Age Action Ireland encouraged older people to share any difficulties they may be going through.

“Anxiety and stress experienced among older people may be caused by uncertainty over the future, stress due to enforced retirement, loss because of bereavement,” Eamon Timmins said.

“So please, if you’re going through a rough patch, let someone know. id="liveblog-362870">

16.24 - Welcome along to some rare Wednesday evening Europa League action as we take you through Manchester City’s Round of 32, second leg tie with current holders Porto.

There’s already been big news at the club today as Carlos Tevez finally came to his senses and apologised to the club for his behaviour during a five month absence from the team. You can read all about that here.

16.31 - City have no injuries worries to deal with but bring in Sergio Aguero for Mario Balotelli, who has to settle for a place on the bench. Porto, meanwhile, make two changes from the weekend as Alex Sandro and Argentine defender Nicolas Otamendi replace Alvaro Pereira and Danilo.

Man City: Hart, Richards, Kompany, Lescott, Clichy, Barry, De Jong, Nasri, Yaya Toure, Silva, Aguero. Subs: Pantilimon, Zabaleta, Milner, Pizarro, Dzeko, Savic, Balotelli.

FC Porto: Helton, Maicon, Rolando, Alex Sandro, Otamendi, Gonzalez, Joao Moutinho, James Rodriguez, Fernando, Varela, Hulk. Subs: Bracali, Cristian Rodriguez, Kleber, Djalma, Sapunaru, Defour, Podstawski.

16.49 - Random fact about the game’s referee, Wolfgang Stark.

Former Ireland captain and ITV pundit Andy Townsend was mistaken as the German whistleblower by a band of abusive fans in a Madrid restaurant last year after he had just sent off Pepe and Jose Mourinho during Real Madrid’s 2-0 defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League.

16.54 - Porto trail 2-1 from the first leg after Sergio Aguero’s late winner and have a poor record in England which, compared to City’s excellent home form, means Vitor Pereira’s side are facing a pretty tough challenge to progress to the last 16. Minutes to kick-off here…

17.01 - Lucho Gonzalez and Silvestre Varela tip off to signal the game’s start.

17.02 - GOAL! Manchester City 1 (3) Porto 0 (1) (Sergio Aguero)

Deary me, that didn’t take long. Otamendi plays a slopping pass straight to De Jong, who finds Yaya Toure. The Ivorian midfielder slots a delightful ball through to Aguero, who finishes into the bottom corner for his 20th goal of the season. After just 19 seconds of play. Wow.

17.15 - Porto have strung together some nice football since the goal but are being harried by Toure, Barry and De Jong in the middle of the park. Aguero gets away from Rolando in the centre circle and is blatantly pulled back by Rolando, prompting Mr Stark to brandish the first yellow card.

Just been the one chance on goal in the opening 15 minutes then.

17.18 - Great chance for City to double their lead. Silva threads through a super ball to Toure, but Helton is out like a light to close down. His second attempt is wild and sails over the bar.

Down the other end, Hart stands strong to block Varela’s effort.

17.21 - We’ve managed to get our hands on a clip of the goal. And what’s ours is yours.

17.27 - Porto have got themselves a free-kick in a dangerous position here as James Rodriguez is brought down on the edge of the box… Joao Moutinho steps up and gets the ball over the wall but fails to bring it back down in time.

17.32 - Aguero deserved his second of the night with that big of magic. Silva picks out the Argentinian’s run and the man nicknamed ‘El Kun’ nods past an onrushing Helton before floating a delicate ball over the head of the last man. It agonisingly clips the underside of the bar, however, and bounces back into play.

17.41 - Five minutes of neat exchanges between Porto’s front six ends in an ambitious strike from Gonzalez sailing over. For all their slick passing, Porto have only troubled the one time when Hart was more than up to the challenge.

David Silva finds a yard 20 yards out and has a pop. When that shot is deflected out for a corner, a challenge on Helton sees the ball loose in the box. The visitors eventually clear.

17.43 - That was wasteful from City. Aguero breaks on the shoulder of the last man, then squares into space for Toure to run into. He turns back onto his right foot before finding his team-mate again, but Aguero blasts a shot well wide.

17.46 - Hulk’s free-kick is hit with some venom but De Jong puts his body on the line to redirect the strike out for a corner. When the falls for Otamendi, the defender fails to get underneath the ball and slices it far too high.

Half-time whistle is imminent…

17.47 - Half-time: Manchester City 1 (3) Porto 0 (1)

18.01 - So Aguero’s goal was the fastest in this season’s competition, beating Mike Taison of Metalist Kharkiv by one second. While AEK Athens attacker Ismael Blanco boasts the quickest in the Europa League under in its current guise, Manchester United cast-off David Bellion took just 11 seconds to find the back of the net for Bordeaux against Galatasaray in 2009, an all-time UEFA Cup record.

18.04 - Second 45 about to get underway. ‘Blue Moon’ belts out around the Etihad Stadium/Eastlands. City fans feeling confident and rightly so. Porto not quite dead and buried yet though.

18.11 - Quick free-kick catches City on the hop and Gonzalez is allowed a shot from 18 yards. It’s not far away but didn’t look to be troubling Hart.

18.14 - Hulk, who has switched wings to his favoured left since half-time, gets the better of Micah Richards and whips a super ball into that area between the defenders and the keeper.

Richards has now gone down injured after a clearance and is going to be replaced by James Milner by the looks of things.

18.17 - Porto have the ball in the back of the net… but it’s been ruled offside. A cross by Maicon pinballs off a defender and to the feet of James Rodriguez, who scores from a couple of yards out. Replays show Hulk was in an offside position, however.

Meanwhile, Richards hobbles back on but still seems in some pain. Milner has been introduced, but it is in place of Gareth Barry.

18.20 - Ouch! Nasty looking injury for Otamendi there, who gets a full-force boot in the left eye from team-mate Maicon. Play has been stopped while he receives attention.

18.24 - That is the end of Otamendi’s night as Pereira makes a double substitution. Romanian defender Cristian Sapunaru comes on in his place and Varela makes way for Uruguayan schemer Cristian Rodriguez. 25 minutes remain.

18.27 - The trailing leg of Toure takes down Moutinho about 30 yards out and he will now miss the first leg of the next round if they do progress tonight. Hulk’s execution is poor for the resulting free.

18.35 - GOAL! Manchester City 2 (4) Porto 0 (1) (Edin Dzeko)
Dzeko’s name will be on this goal, but it was all Aguero. Skipping inside off the left flank, he delays the pass and rolls a perfectly-weighted ball to the feet of his strike partner, who has the easy task of tucking the ball under the body of Helton.

18.41 - The Etihad Stadium show their appreciation to Aguero as he wanders off to be replaced by new signing David Pizarro. He’s clearly been the man of the match tonight. Porto withdraw James Rodriquez for Belgian international Steven Defour.

18.42 - GOAL! Manchester City 3 (5) Porto 0 (1) (David Silva)<br

Senator Norris said that the editor said the articles were “payback time for what I had done in standing up for victims of invasion privacy” and specifically because of his focus on Ireland’s defamation law.

Norris called a speech by Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte as “pretty limp” and said that the debate in the Seanad should include discussion of what he described as “bullying” by the media of public figures. He also claimed that “bullying happens inside every single newspaper” and that he had proof of it but that those people who supplied him with the information were afraid to stand up against their “editorial masters”.

He was scathing of the “self-regulating” Press Council and said that “every newspaper” had carried editorials calling for other professions to have independent regulators – except their own profession. He also said that he had had to change his phone number three or four times but that “Grub Street” had managed to get his new number with little difficulty. He finished on an angry call for the Government to tackle the Irish media and claimed that there was not one TV, newspaper or broadcasting outlet that had not “villified me, blackguarded me, defamed me and libelled me”.

Senator Norris had become the focus of intense media scrutiny over buzbeto

THERE IS SOMETHING immensely satisfying about a group of amateur players trumping top professionals, no matter what the context.

In 2012, it is difficult to conceive of the American national ice hockey team as anything but one of the world’s greatest. After all, the National Hockey League has become synonymous with the sport, featuring stars who would challenge for a place on any all-time roster.

That wasn’t always the case though. In fact, back in 1980, the team which the US sent to the Winter Olympics was made up of amateurs and college players. When they were paired against the best team in the world, the Soviet Union, in the competition’s semi-finals, it seemed that a valiant defeat was the best possible outcome.

In the context of the Cold War, the game took on a heightened significance. With the 1980 games being staged in New York, America steeled itself for a famous Soviet victory in their own back-yard.

After all, the Russians had won Olympic Gold in 1964. And in 1968 and 1972. And then again in 1976.

Simply put, on the Olympic stage, they were practically unbeatable.

As with most great underdog stories, the favourites took an early lead, Krutov giving the Soviet Union a 1-0 advantage. America equalised. And so the pattern repeated itself until Mark Johnson tied the game at 3-3 mid-way through the final period.

Even when US captain Mike Eruzione gave America a single-goal lead with ten minutes left on the clock, few believed that the United States could pull off the most unlikely of upsets.

The clock kept ticking. The Americans defended as though their lives depended on it. Their nation’s honour did.

And the clock kept ticking, the Soviets panicking with each passing second.

With eleven seconds remaining, and the 8,500-capacity Field House on its feet in anticipation, the stage was set for Al Michaels to deliver some of the most memorable sporting commentary of all time.
<blockquote
