FM104 says its 'edgy' presenters will be punished for breaking the Ed Sheeran embargo

…but the whole thing sounds awfully like a publicity stunt.

Updated at 4.08pm

FM104 IS INSISTING regular breakfast presenters Mark Noble and ‘Jim Jim’ Nugent will be punished for breaking news of Ed Sheeran’s Croke Park gig too early.

The pair were taken off air mid-show this morning by their boss, programme director Dave Kelly — an event that prompted some listeners to immediately take to Twitter to cry ‘publicity stunt’

To be honest, the whole affair seems a little inauthentic.

The above tweet (according to radio news site radiotoday.ie – we didn’t hear it) coincided with Kelly coming on air to tell listeners that the presenters had been suspended for an unconfirmed period of time for letting the cat out of the bag about the concert.

DJ Kilian O’Sullivan then took over for the remainder of their slot.

The three presenters have all been sending out enigmatic tweets about this morning’s show…

TheJournal.ie attempted to contact Kelly and the 104 marketing department earlier — to no avail.

We were told, however, that the two DJs were still ”suspended until further notice” and that they had been called into a meeting with Kelly and CEO Margaret Nelson.

The station later posted a statement about the incident on Facebook, insisting that the presenters had broken a direct order from Nelson, and that they would face disciplinary action.

They’ll be back on the show tomorrow, though.

“This morning on FM104’s Strawberry Alarm Clock presenters Jim Jim and Nobby broke an embargo concerning the Ed Sheeran concert at Croke Park.

“The embargo was enforced until 8.55am, which the presenters were fully aware of.

“Due to the edgy nature of the show, Jim Jim and Nobby teased the news prior to the agreed time and left listeners in little doubt as to who was going to be announced.

“Despite getting a phone call from FM104’s CEO Margaret Nelson confirming the embargo last night, the guys didn’t take it seriously enough.

“After a difference of opinion, Programme Director Dave Kelly went into the studio at 9am and told the presenters that due to the seriousness of their actions they would be suspended until further notice.

“The presenters have been asked, however, to facilitate their car giveaway final with Volkswagen Ireland tomorrow morning.

“Disciplinary action will be taken, but beyond that FM104 cannot confirm details.”
