Former nightclub tycoon understands people being driven to suicide by debt

Robbie Fox was speaking after comments by the Master of the High Court yesterday in which he said banks’ aggressive actions in pursuing some loans had driven some borrowers to suicide.

ONE OF THE most high-profile casualties of the recession has said he can understand how people in debt to the banks take their own lives.

The nightclub and restaurant owner Robbie Fox was responding in the Irish Daily Mirror to comments made by the Master of the High Court Ed Honohan yesterday when he said that some of those subjected to banks’ aggressive actions in pursuing debt owed were being driven to suicide.

Fox was left with debt of €4.5 million following the collapse of his various businesses in June 2009 and told the Irish Daily Mirror that “there might have been 60 seconds when I felt there was no way out.

He said he understood why some people were being driven to suicide in “terrible circumstances” where their lives are “torn apart”. He added that the country’s mortgage and bankruptcy laws should be overhauled to help those struggling with debt.
