Fort Hood shooter sentenced to death

Major Nidal Hasan was found guilty of the premeditated murder of 13 fellow soldiers at Fort Hood in Texas in 2009.

AN AMERICAN SOLDIER who was found guilty of the premeditated murder of 13 people in a shooting rampage in Texas has been sentenced to death.

A military court this evening ordered that 42-year-old Major Nidal Hasan will be put to death by lethal injection for the 2009 attack which left thirteen dead – twelve of them soldiers – and dozens more wounded at Fort Hood military base in Texas.

Hasan had been due to deploy to Afghanistan weeks after the attack, and has said that he shot the soldiers to protect fellow Muslims from an illegal war.

After being found guilty of the murders last week, the court could have either ruled that he would face the death penalty or else face a sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole.

The former Army psychiatrist had defended himself during the trial and had sought the death penalty for his crime.
