FOUR MEN HAVE been arrested as a result of an ongoing investigation targeting dissident republicans by the Special Detective Unit and assisted by local gardaí.

The garda Emergency Response Unit stopped and searched a car travelling northbound on the N1, north of Dundalk, last night at 9.30pm.

A mortar type device was discovered in the car and as a consequence the services of an Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was requested.  The device was then rendered safe.

Two men in their 20s were arrested at the scene, and another man in his 30s was arrested nearby.

In a follow-up operation, a property was searched in Dromiskin, Co Louth, and another man in his 30s was arrested.  A number of items were seized in this search – a garda statement has said these items are subject to technical examination.

The arrested men are being detained in Drogheda, Balbriggan and Santry Garda Stations under section 30 of the Offences Against The State Act.
