Heaviest snowfall in 100 years hits the east of South Korea, with up to 3.2 feet falling in some places, causing around €3.1m in damage.

EASTERN SOUTH KOREA has been hit by its heaviest snowfall in 100 years, after over three feet (100cm) of snow fell in the east of the country at the weekend.

The Korea Times reports that the largest single-day snowfall since 1911 came down between Friday and Saturday.

Although dozens of greenhouses have been destroyed by the heavy snow and farmland damaged, the paper reports that the weather may help the country in its push to host the 2018 Winter Olympics.

An International Olympic Committee inspection team is due to arrive in the prospective host city of Pyeongchang today.

Thousands of soldiers have been deployed to clear the snow and army helicopters have been carrying supplies to isolated areas, the AFP reports. More snow is expected to fall later this week, causing further damage to property.

The snowfall comes after neighbouring North Korea recorded its coldest winter in over 25 years, Reuters reports.
