Elderly man killed in Galway after his car hit a tree

The man was the sole occupant of the car and no one else was injured.

AN ELDERLY MAN has been killed in a road collision in Galway.

The man in his 80s was fatally injured when the car he was driving left the road and hit a tree. The incident happened at Ballydoogan on the Loughrea to Portumna Road at 4.10pm.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was the sole occupant of the car. He is the 69th person to die on Irish roads so far this year.

This stretch of road is currently closed pending a garda technical examination and local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact Loughrea Garda Station on 091-842870, The Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
