Man in his 30s arrested after three adults found dead at a home in Louth this morning

Gardaí are at the scene of the incident at Tallanstown, in an area north of Ardee.

LAST UPDATE | 29 Sep

THREE PEOPLE FROM the same family died in a violent incident at their home in rural County Louth this morning.

Gardaí were called to a property at Annaghminnon just before 10am today. A man and woman in their 50s and a man in his 20s were found dead at the house.

Armed gardaí were also called to the scene and the area has been sealed off for forensic examinations.

A man in his 30s was arrested and is currently detained by gardaí under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. It is believed medical assistance has been sought for the suspect.

In a statement this evening the garda press office said: “The Offices of the Coroner and the State Pathologist have been notified. The remains of the deceased have been removed from the scene to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda where post mortem examinations will be conducted tomorrow.

“The investigation is being conducted from an Incident Room at Ardee Garda Station and a Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed.”

A family liaison officer has also been appointed “to support and keep the family of the deceased informed”, they said.

Local representatives have also been speaking about the horrific discovery.

Local Councillor Rachel Kerley, who lives a short distance from the scene said people are in a state of shock as news broke about the deaths.

“I think it’s a complete tragedy and such a shock. You know, all of our thoughts obviously go with the family and friends and the wider community.

“I only like just about three miles down the road, and it was just overwhelming shock when we heard this morning.

“I think as well, we’re really important to note people that are affected, the local residents and stuff, to definitely reach out to support systems and to contact relevant people if they are struggling with this grief and the overwhelming shock,” she said.

Another local councillor John Sheridan called on people not to share social media speculation around the discovery.

“It’s very upsetting. From 10 o’clock this morning, when people first learned and saw ambulances and garda cars, they obviously became very aware that something very serious had happened.

“All morning there’s a lot of word has been filtering out a little bit of speculation too, which hasn’t been helpful.

“Since then, the events have become more clear as to what has happened. [This is] a very well known and respected family, [they] would be very well known, particularly in sporting events and running.

“They would have been very much, seen a lot, and that’s probably what makes it all the more shocking,” he said.

Local TD, Ruairí Ó Murchú, expressed his shock at the news of the deaths of the three people.

“My first thoughts, and those of everyone else, are with the loved ones of this family who have been violently killed in their home.

“This is a truly shocking and appalling incident which has absolutely stunned the whole community all over County Louth.

“The fact that three members of one family seem to have died in dreadful and violent circumstances on a Monday morning in a quiet and rural area of Mid Louth is appalling.

“I would appeal for anyone with information to go to the Gardaí immediately, and ask that people do not speculate on this incident online or on social media,” he said.

An Garda Síochána made an appeal for anyone with information on this incident to contact the Garda Investigation Team at Drogheda Garda Station on 041 987 4200 or the Garda Confidential Phone Number on 1800 666 111.
