Operation Slowdown detects 364 drivers speeding over 24-hour period

From 7am on Friday until 7am this morning, gardaí checked the speed of 96,838 vehicles.

GARDAÍ ROLLED OUT a major operation this weekend to encourage drivers to reduce their speeds on Irish roads.

Operation Slow Down ran from 7am on Friday morning until 7am on this morning, which has been identified as when the highest proportion of fatal collisions take place.

Multiple checkpoints were set up around the country, with results over the 24 hour period showing that gardaí checked the speed of 96,838 vehicles, with 364 detected speeding.

The gardaí have urged people to slow down this bank holiday weekend.

On the Garda Facebook page, they said that last night on the N20 near Buttevant in Cork “we picked up a vehicle travelling at 92 km/h in a 50 km/h zone and in Kildare on the R418 we detected a vehicle travelling at 139 km/h in an 80 km/h zone”.

Chief Superintendent Michael O Suillivan of the Garda National Traffic Bureau thanked the 96,474 drivers checked over the 24 hour period of Operation Slowdown, who were driving within the speed limit permitted.

The gardaí were also on hand to help put cyclists. This cyclists below gets a high visibility jacket courtesy of the Road Safety Authority.
